Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Alexander Technique like yoga or Pilates?

No.  The Alexander Technique is not an exercise regime involving repetitions of particular movements.  You are not learning exercises or postures.  You are learning to identify habits which cause inappropriate tension and to find ways of letting that tension go.  From my own experience yoga and Pilates, if well taught, can be very useful, but it is best to have done some Alexander Technique beforehand so that you don't reinforce existing distorting habits while doing the exercises.

Will I be manipulated or massaged?

No.  The hands-on contact in an Alexander lesson is very gentle and is designed to give you guidance as you learn new ways of doing things.  A good massage can be excellent but it is not the Alexander Technique.

Who is the Alexander Technique for?

It is for anyone.  There are no age barriers.  You could be an athlete or musician wishing to improve your performance, a busy mother getting stressed out, or a pensioner with a back pain problem – or you just want to find out what the Alexander Technique is all about.

How many lessons do I need?

One lesson should be enough for you to judge whether the Alexander Technique is for you.  After 6 lessons you should notice a difference.  After 10 lessons you will  start to be able to apply the Technique to your own life without constant prodding from a teacher.  After 25 lessons you will have learned a great deal and should be able to apply the Technique to your daily life regularly using the skills you have acquired.

How often should I have lessons?

If you are going to un-learn the habits of a lifetime you will need quite a lot of re-enforcing guidance from a teacher.  In the early stages a lesson at least once a week would be helpful and beneficial to you.  Some pupils make good progress with the several lessons in a few weeks and then feel able to come for a lesson, say, once a month, to 'top-up'.  Many people have busy lives and can find regular commitments difficult, but like everything else in life, the more you put in the more you will get out of it.

What should I wear?

It is best to wear ordinary comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement.  Pupils remain fully clothed throughout and you will only be asked to remove your shoes.  You will find trousers more convenient than skirts.

How long is a lesson?

A lesson is normally around 45 minutes long.  The initial introductory lesson may last a little longer.

How much does it cost?

Currently the fee for a lesson is £35.00.  Some pupils, once they have discovered that the Alexander Technique is indeed for them, will book a series of 10 lessons in advance and in those circumstances they will get a discount.
