How will the Alexander Technique Benefit you?

The Alexander Technique enables you to start to regain the poise, good posture and natural co-ordination which you, like millions of others, had as a child.  Habits developed over many years such as slouching in front of a computer or TV for hours on end, excessive tension generated by driving cars or the daily grind of everyday life can gradually generate distortions in your posture, how you move, how you breathe, how to speak, so that how you live becomes the sum of your habits, which may be far from the natural and efficiently functioning individual you could be.

The Alexander Technique will not only enable you to prevent these distorting habits but you will be able to do it effortlessly through the application of thought about how you go about doing things.

“To refrain from an act is no less an act than to commit one.”

Sir Charles Sherington

Neurologist and Nobel Prize Winner

If you have persistent, recurring problems which keep recurring in spite of any therapy or treatment then the chances are that the Alexander Technique can help you prevent these problems.

Even if you don't have any specific problems the AT will help you develop an improved sense of balance, poise and well-being.

Many athletes, dancers, actors and musicians have used the Alexander Technique to improve their performance in their particular disciplines.  If you want to improve your performance in any activity or discipline then the Alexander Technique is for you.

"I find the Alexander Technique very useful in my work.  Things happen without you trying.  They get to be light and relaxed.  You must get an Alexander teacher to show it to you."

John Cleese

Actor and Comedian

The Alexander Technique is a unique and practical approach that addresses the fundamental cause of pain, stress and tension. It has helped millions of people across the world to overcome naturally:

  • muscle tension and stiffness
  • back, neck and joint pain
  • poor posture
  • breathing and vocal difficulties
  • anxiety and stress related conditions

So what is the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique is a unique method combining verbal guidance and assistance with gentle hand-on touch from the teacher, which enables you to rediscover poise, balance, and freedom of movement by:

·         lengthening the spine and increasing the flexibility of the back

·         strengthening muscle tone especially in the back

·         reducing back, neck and shoulder pain

·         improving your breathing

·         Improving your posture

·         improving your sense of well-being

It was devised and developed by F M Alexander (1869-1955)

It is not a form of therapy, treatment, massage or a relaxation method but an effortless technique which you learn through a series of lessons.  It is not an 'alternative therapy' and it does not conflict with conventional medicine or medical opinion.

You will find it very practical – like learning to drive a car, for example, and you can learn it in individual lessons from a teacher like me.

You will benefit from it regardless of age or physical condition.  It is for everyone.

Best of all it provides lifelong benefit as you can apply it at any time.  It will always be there for you.

'The Alexander Technique involves a sense of muscles and how we use them. No amount of writing and talking about it can substitute for the direct experience.'

David Garlick, BSc (Med), MB, BS, PhD, Physician,Medical Scientist and Alexander Teacher
